…to travel nursing!
So for those who don’t know, travel nursing is a thing. Nurses work with agencies and take contracts at various hospitals across the US. These contracts are usually 13 weeks long — some are shorter, longer, and sometimes you can extend at the end of your contract. Hospitals need nurses for lots of various reasons, their nurses are all going back to school, nurses on maternity leave, new charting system put in place and people don’t like it so they quit, the Southern states tend to get “snowbirds” in the winter and they need more staff for more patients, winter in general is flu season and hospitals can have a higher number of patients but not enough staff to cover, etc.
I’ve always had travel nursing in the back of my mind, and right now seemed like a good time to start the jump. Most places require you to have 1-2 years of experience in a certain specialty before traveling — mine is ICU. I will hit 2 years of experience (officially) on July 3. Aaron will be back doing clinicals full-time, instead of his office job M-F research hours he’s had the last two years. I’ll hardly see him working 80 hour weeks, 12 hour shifts for 6 days a week. So it just makes sense to make the leap into travel nursing now.
I wanted to start somewhat close to home, maybe Austin or Dallas so I can be a quick drive away and know some friends in the area. However, the jobs just weren’t there and I wasn’t getting any call backs to the few places I submitted to.
So, *drumroll please* I will be starting this travel nurse journey in Albuquerque, New Mexico! I’m super excited, I love New Mexico and the Southwest (hell, I have a tattoo of a desert scene on my foot after visiting Arizona last year), and I think ABQ will be a really cool town to experience. I’m nervous about being farther than I originally wanted, and going somewhere where I know NO ONE, but I have asked allll my friends to come out and visit me. I already have a weekend booked to come back home to visit and celebrate my niece’s birthday. Now I just gotta get housing, and I’ll be good to go!
In addition to relocating for a couple months coming up, I have some other trips in the works too! Heading to Baltimore in September with Tori to visit Carolyn, and then in November I’ll be heading to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic with all of my varsity girls (Tori, Carolyn, Carli). Then in January it’s off to Iceland (plus a few days in NYC) with Angie, Jonny, and Stephanie!!
